A test: Introversion and Extraversion

January 18, 2011

Psychology

We’re doing a little test today!

Please respond to the following questions. You can do so by filling in [form deleted] . Just FYI, this is completely anonymous! Thank you :D

These are the questions of the test:

I am the life of the party.
I enjoy being the center of attention.
I am skilled in handling social situations.
I like to be where the action is.
I make new friends easily.
I am quiet around strangers.
I don’t like to draw attention to myself.
I don’t like to party on the weekends.
I like to work independently.
I often enjoy spending time by myself.

What do you do for a living?
What is your favorite way of spending time?
Do you consider yourself to be impulsive?
Do you consider yourself introverted or extraverted?

Thursday, I will write a blog about intro- and extraversion. I will explain what the differences in behavior, causes and implications are and hopefully we’ll have some data we can discuss, too. So please make sure you reply to the questions I posted above, so that I can provide us with some custom statistics, too! :P

Next Tuesday I will discuss what intro- and extraversion have to do with the ability to be alone and how intro- and extraversion is differently appreciated in various countries over the world.

Do you consider yourself introverted or extroverted?

Okay that last one is going to take some answering. See, I don’t buy into the idea that there is one group of extroverts and one group of introverts with a shard dividing line down the middle. Sure there are people who would rather keep to themselves, and other who are great minglers, but I believe there are loads of people in the middle who might not be the life of the party, but they’re not sitting off in a corner by themselves either.
There’s a gradient at work here and different people fall on all different levels of shyness or outgoingness (that’s totally a real word by the way.) The fact that we group people into “introverts” and “extroverts” is a failure of language. We don’t have a word for “sort of friendly except during the winter months for some reason” so we have to lump them in somewhere. This kind of thinking is erroneous at best and dangerous at worst. The lines are far blurrier than we like to imagine.

Is it possible to be both?

Hey Kristen, thanks for your comment :)

      To answer it…

Usually, extraversion is measured with a model called the “Big 5 Factor Model”, which also measures personality traits. Beside extraversion it also measures openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism. (we’re just doing extraversion, in my test!)

So, when you take the test, you can score from 0-100% on extraversion, 0 is very introverted, 100 is very extraverted. That means if you score 50, you’re kind of in between!

I hope that makes sense :) You can find more on the Big 5 here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Five_personality_traits
