Weird Phenomenon: Crop Circles

I think we all know about the crop circles so I will skip the basics today. Just watch this video and tell me what you think.

Real or not real? Are aliens out there trying to contact us? Or is this all simply a hoax?

What I truly wonder about is… These aliens supposedly have space- or aircrafts or something else they can move themselves with. This suggests that their technological advancement is great – why then do they not communicate with us directly? One of the professors that speak in this video says “it’s because they want to give us time to let us adjust to the idea that we’re not alone out there”, but to me that’s just a bunch of crap.

On youtube I could only find videos that discuss proof for crop circles, and my search for a video that sheds a skeptical, maybe even scientific light on the circles was futile (if you find anything, please share!). All I could find was this page on SkepDic, but all they say is “Most, if not all, crop circles are probably due to pranksters. For example, Doug Bower and David Chorley admit to hoaxing approximately 250 circles over many years.”

Even if this might be a hoax, my human curiosity has been piqued.

P.S. If you’ve watched this video and watched a few other suggested videos… you’ll notice that the people who make these videos tend to prefer new age music, which I personally find ironic. And, in my opinion, it lowers credibility.

Love this one. Crop circles have always fascinated me. I think it would be egotistical for us to believe we are the only intelligent form of life out there. :)

Hi Angela, thanks again for stopping by (and for the wonderful mention on Twitter :D ).

Crop circles indeed are fascinating, although it does make me wonder whether or not we’re too easy to believe something just for the sake of “finding proof” there’s life out there. Even the psychological process behind that is intriguing :p

      All the best!

Interesting video. Though the “alien message” was a bit underwhelming. Seems if ETs wanted to communicate with us, they’d leave straightforward messages in stable media. But maybe I’m anthropomorphizing the alleged ETs. Maybe cryptic messages in farm fields are perfectly logical to them . . or illogical, or whatever their criteria for communication is.

Here’s MIT’s take on an MIT crop circle creation documentary I watched a while back:

    And here’s a rebuttal:

That’s exactly what I thought. Plus, I thought the stereotype alien face was just a bit much. I too think that if they were serious about contacting us, they wouldn’t have any trouble connecting with us in any other way. I mean, they didn’t see us communicate through these circles… Unless they can’t actually see us – maybe we’re on a different frequency of reality?

      Ah, I’m ranting :p.

I’m going to read those articles, I bet they’re interesting. I see MIT’s article mentions Discovery Channel – I was actually looking for something from either DC or NatGeo, but couldn’t find anything.

The stereotypical alien face was just too much.  While I believe that, statistically speaking, we cannot be the only living organisms in this vast universe, I don’t really feel that a technologically advanced race would come all the way here just to draw pictures in our fields.

        Nice links, CMStewart!

Hi Carloyn, it’s so nice to meet another fiction writing clinical psych (even if I’m still in training, lol). And it seems my first attempt at promoting at G+ has already been fruitful. How wonderful!

I indeed do appreciate your scientific skepticism, hehe. I too try to be skeptical (but still be open for other things, which is why I investigate things like these for my “Weird Phenomena” blog series). As I mentioned in my reply to Angela, I think the psychological process behind why we would believe this phenomenon is just as interesting as the crops themselves.

However, I do believe that those guys I mentioned in my post quit creating those circles in around the 90ies, and after that the circles have continued to show up. So unless other people were inspired to have a new hobby…

Still, I too think it’s unlikely aliens would connect with us in that way if that were actually the case.

I love the baloney detection kit, I’m going to share that with my family members who still believe everything they see on TV. Ha!

    Great Baloney Kit!

Seems kind of silly to me that some people are positive EVERY crop circle is prankster-made. I guess I’m skeptical. Pranksters leaving dozens of highly complex, perfectly executed, electro-magnetized “sculpted” images in fields in the middle of the night- without being detected- (well, except for the illustration video and other videos) and without breaking the crop stalks seems *kind of* reasonable. ETs or other phenomena leaving these images seems a lot less reasonable. But until I have sufficient proof- which makes sense to me- I’ll say I don’t know what made some of the more complex images.

  • http://twitter.com/CMStewartWrite CMStewart

Yeah, if whatever made that crop circle had instead sculpted an image of my
face, exactly a it appears in my avatar- in minute detail and in color- then I
might start to seriously question whether Earthling pranksters did it.
LOLWho knows, maybe the ETs are trying to communicate with the crops.
And maybe the crops are responding. ;)

Lol, I love that theory :p

There is plenty of evidence to suggest Crop Circles have been occurring for centuries  just search ‘Devil  & Crops’ in Google and you can find historical accounts. Now as for the video you are right about the credibility issue and there are countless people who have taken to faking crop circles both for Art and for tourism.

    • http://www.manoneileen.com Manon Eileen

I think I came across some of those accounts, yes… I think it’s still pretty interesting. It’s a shame it’s all being befuddled with the circles we know are fake for certain, lol.
