Discovering The Mothman: Prophecy or Nonsense?

The Mothman is the name given to a strange creature reported in the Charleston and Point Pleasant areas of West Virginia between November 1966 and December 1967. The creature was sporadically reported to be seen before and after those dates, with some sightings as recent as 2007.

The Mothman was first spotted in 1926 by a boy. At the same time, three men were digging a grave in a nearby graveyard when they saw a brown human shape with wings soaring out from behind trees. Both incidents were reported independently of each other. There have been many sightings of Mothman though no photographic evidence exists at all.

Most observers describe the Mothman as a winged man-sized creature with large reflective red eyes. It often appeared to have no head, with its eyes set into its chest. A number of hypotheses have been presented to explain eyewitness accounts, ranging from misidentification and coincidence to paranormal phenomena and conspiracy theories.

A Report

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Wamsley, and Mrs. Marcella Bennett, with her infant daughter Teena, were in a car en-route to visit their friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Thomas, who lived in a small house near the igloos (concrete dome-shaped dynamite storage structures erected during WW-II) near the TNT plant. The igloos were now empty, some owned by the county, others by companies intending to use them for storage. They were heading back to their car when a figure appeared behind their parked vehicle. Mrs. Bennett said that it seemed like it had been lying down, slowly rising up from the ground, large and gray, with glowing red eyes. While Wamsley phoned the police, the creature walked onto the porch and peered in at them through the window.

There was a movie made about this phenomenon, called The Mothman Prophecies (2002), featuring Richard Gere. I saw this movie a long time ago, but I remember I found it very freaky. Here’s the trailer.

So what do you think? Real or not real? Is there something like The Mothman? And if there was, what would its goal be? I didn’t find anything online that said what The Mothman actually said to the people who saw it, or what it did. Does it, as in The Mothman Prophecies, share prophecy or “messages”?

Or is The Mothman a psychotic vision?

It makes me curious.

I’ve seen the Mothman Prophecies, strange movie. I think there are many things that we do not understand and many places that are sheltered enough that there remains the possibility of the unknown emerging. Such as the Mothman. Suggestion: Keep a very large light on hand which he will feel compelled to flit around first, before trying to eat you :)

Lol, the large light would help I guess! Thanks for stopping by, Gene :)

Call me grumpy, but I’m a skeptic on this one. If this thing existed in West Virginia someone would have shot and stuffed one of them by now!
He looks cute in the picture, though :)
    Cheers

Actually I believe this entity is real. Just because something is supernatural doesn’t mean it isn’t real. Fire, twins and comets used to be considered supernatural events, too. I do believe there is another realm of beings we don’t understand. It seems to me that the Mothman was always spotted right before horrible, tragic occurances. That’s part of why it was called the Mothman…it was drawn to tragedy like a moth.

Interesting argument, Kristen! Especially the last part is an interesting idea. I truly wonder… But I hope I’ll never see it!

Thanks a lot for stopping by! :)
