Solitary Confinement: It’s nothing but torture

Not too long ago, my boyfriend and I watched a documentary on the National Geographic channel, called “Solitary Confinement”. Nat Geo introduced us to solitary confinement (SC) by showing some of its history, particularly the very first experiments with SC. In 1829, the first SC complex was built in the US, and in 1913, researchers decided SC was “ineffective, cruel and torturous”. They concluded that instead of curing the prisoners’ antisocial tendencies, they became paranoid, disoriented and even delirious. The United States are one of the few countries in the world that still widely uses solitary confinement.
